GENDOCS | DOCUMENTATION

Our new documentation CLI

We've been using Gendocs as an internal tool to generate documentation for a while now and finally decided to release it as an application.

Marketing site

When releasing Gendocs, we decided to use Gendocs itself to document the whole thing. On top of that, we obviously still needed a marketing site to attract interest and give users a quick and simple tour of what Gendocs is about.

Gendocs didn't have the functionality to use a custom home page when we first wanted to release. So to start off, we added the functionality to add a custom home page to Gendocs. This feature is now also available to our users and documented in Gendocs.

The main goal of Gendocs is to keep it simple. Which is exactly why we went with a very clean and simple front page as well as a simple pricing scheme.

Searching

By far the most important part of documentation is the search functionality. If you can't find what you're looking for, all other features are irrelevant.

We usually use the Elastic stack to enable search in our apps but this time we went with MeiliSearch and were genuinely surprised by how easy it was to use and how well it works.

The Elastic stack is still the king of search but we'll definitely use MeiliSearch again if ever we need a simple search setup with all the extra functionality that Elastic brings to the table.
